IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS TO FOLLOW:
- Bookmark this page so you can come back to it later if needed.
- Read the Manual BEFORE watching the videos.
- TO SEE THE MANUAL: You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader. Most people have it already. If you don’t, go to this web site, CHOOSE THE PROPER VERSION FOR YOUR OPERATING SYSTEM, and download it for free: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2_allversions.html. As an alternative you may want to use FoxReader (I personally prefer this to Adobe Acrobat Reader and have had fewer problems with it). You can download it here: https://www.foxitsoftware.com/downloads/
- After you complete all of the course videos, read the FAQ below for updates and clarifications. The information in the FAQ section is the latest information and supersedes the information in the manual and videos.
VERY IMPORTANT:
PAPER TRADE THIS (OR ANY) METHOD SUCCESSFULLY FOR A MINIMUM OF 3-6 MONTHS BEFORE TRADING WITH REAL MONEY.
ALSO MAKE SURE YOU USE SOLID MONEY MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUES (this is ignored by some students, but it is one of the most important factors in determining your success). Ignore this warning to your own peril since money management and trading discipline/psychology are the key differences that separate the pros from the amateurs.
NEVER TRADE WITH MONEY YOU CAN’T AFFORD TO LOSE.

The video player uses flash technology. This doesn’t work well on the Chrome browser. Most students can see the videos when using either the Internet Explorer or Opera browsers. We’ll be changing the video formats soon, but until then we recommend you use one of those web browsers for this course.

FAQ:
Submit your questions to barry@topdogtrading.com. Some questions submitted will be included in this section if they are considered to be relevant to other traders. If you do NOT want your question included publicly here, please indicate that in your email.
Please note that many of these questions are for advanced traders who are looking to “tweak” the methodology. Therefore many of these topics may be beyond the understanding of newer traders.
Don’t fret! Everything you need to understand the methodology is contained in the course material above.
WARNING: Reading the following questions can also lead to confusion and draw one away from the simplicity of the methodology as taught in the course.
Hopefully some of the Q & A below will bring clarity to the methodology rather than tempting people to alter, change or tweak things in their constant search for the Holy Grail … which by the way, doesn’t exist.
WHAT ARE THE EXACT RULES FOR ENTRIES, EXITS AND TRAILING STOPS IN SWING TRADING?
The rules for my trading methodology are spelled out in my Top Dog Trading Foundations Courses 1 and 2.
In swing trading I use the exact same indicator settings, the same setups (first retrace in a trend, second retrace in a trend, etc.), the same entries, exits and trailing stops. There are no differences with regard to any of those foundational aspects of my trading methodology, which is why those are the “Foundations” courses.
HOW DO YOU USE VOLUME IN TRADING FOREX?
You cannot use volume in trading spot Forex. Since it isn’t traded through a central exchange, the overall volume is not available at any given time.
However you can trade currency ETFs and futures and use volume for them.
HOW COME WHEN I RUN THE SCANS, MOST OF THE TIME I DON’T GET ANY RESULTS?
This is addressed in the course, but here’s a reminder of a few reasons this may happen:
- On daily charts there are only a few cycles every month and not all of those are tradable. Therefore, since we are looking to enter only at cycle tops and bottoms, it would be expected that there would only be one or two trading opportunities per month.
- While you are scanning thousands of stocks, that does not mean that you are scanning for thousands of possible opportunities. Most stocks are highly correlated to the major indices and therefore do not represent unique opportunities.
- The scanning formulas given are very strict so that you have the code for all the parameters given and also to give you conservative scans. You may choose to “loosen up” the parameters if your risk tolerance is higher by removing or adjusting some of them.
WHICH PARAMETERS IN THE SCANS CAN I REMOVE/ADJUST?
I don’t make any recommendation about how strict or loose you make the parameters, but the following parameters are not part of the original rules of the method and were just added to give you more strict filters should you want them (these are given for longs, obviously you can also choose the short counterparts if you want):
- Show Stocks where the 3 day slope of the MA(50) is above .01
(you can experiment with different slope values) - and the weekly Stochastic %K(3,1,3) has been increasing for 1 day
- and the weekly Stochastic %D(3,1,3) has been increasing for 1 day
- and the Average Volume(90) is above 100000
- and close is between 10 and 100
- and the MA(15) is below the MA(50) (for Rubber Band Trade)
- and the Bollinger width(20) is between 0 and 0.03 (for Contraction Cycle Long 1 and Short 1 you can experiment with different width values)
- and boll_width is below 0.025 (for Contraction Cycle Long 2 and Short 2 you can experiment with different width values)
TROUBLESHOOTING THE VIDEOS
THE VIDEO DOESN’T WORK AT ALL:
- It most likely has to do with your Internet speed.
- Our videos are hosted on Amazon servers located around the world and you are routed to the closest one to you on the planet, which generally provides excellent access.
- Dial-up Internet accounts generally do not play video very well.
- Cable internet connections do not provide static download speeds because they use shared bandwidth.
- Generally high speed DSL works the best.
- Using a wireless network can cause problems so if you can hardwire to an Ethernet cable it may help the video playback speed.
- Close any open programs you have on your computer. You may want to restart your computer and not open any other programs to free memory resources for your computer to use for playing the videos.
