Stocks ended slightly higher Tuesday, kicking off the last trading week of the year on a positive note with the Nasdaq composite setting a closing record. The major averages closed well off session highs, with the Nasdaq composite just about 4 points above its prior closing high set on Dec. 20. Ahead of the open, the S&P/Case-Shiller U.S. National Home Price Index which measures all nine U.S. census divisions rose 5.6 percent in October from the previous year, extending a new high from the previous month.
